A festive annual celebration of psychedelic plants and fungi known as Entheofest is returning to the University of Michigan campus.

The fourth-annual free event is scheduled to take place Sunday, Sept. 22, on the Diag, honoring “Mother Earth’s sacred plant medicines,” organizers announced.

Similar to the Hash Bash marijuana festival that happens on the Diag each April, Entheofest is in large part a shroom fest and some attendees wear mushroom-themed attire.

But beyond psilocybin or “magic” mushrooms, Entheofest more broadly celebrates the anniversary of Ann Arbor’s decision four years ago to decriminalize all entheogenic plants and fungi, including ayahuasca, ibogaine, mescaline, peyote and other plant-based compounds with hallucinogenic properties that are deemed illegal under state and federal law.

City Council’s September 2020 resolution declared it the city’s lowest law enforcement priority to investigate and arrest anyone for entheogenic plants and fungi.
